Are You Someone’s Answer to Prayer?

Posted by: Bridgett.

What’s my purpose? Have I been called to do something great? Is there even one big thing I’m supposed to do in life that will reach beyond my own little world?

These are questions we all ask at one time or another. Still, most days, our minds are filled with far less grand concerns.

What will I make for dinner? Do I have enough in the bank to pay the bills? How will I pass this math test? Where will I find ideas for my next blog post….

The list goes on.

Have you ever stopped to think, though, that in the midst of the day-to-day rut, this hour, this moment, you could be in this place for a reason that has little or nothing to do with your concerns—the grand ones or the mundane?

What if…for that tiny space of time, you are someone else’s answer to prayer?  Continue reading

The Black Moment: making room for the light

Posted by: Bridgett.

What makes a great story?

What causes the most lasting growth in our lives?

One answer fits both questions.

Some stories affect our emotions so strongly they stay with us for decades.  Some life events change us so profoundly, we emerge almost as different people.

It may be surprising to realize the key to many personal triumphs, and to those characters who make us want to raise a fist in shared celebration, is steeped in fathomless darkness.

The secret to both is what we call in fiction writing “the black moment.” Continue reading

Are You Called to Shine, or to Ignite the Flame in Others?

Posted by: Bridgett.

Purpose. Calling. Ministers and self-help experts say everybody has one.

What’s yours? Have you found it yet?

Do you ever wonder why some people seem called to greatness, while others never hear such a summons?

If you are a Christian, do you feel somehow less “called” because you don’t stand in a pulpit before a stadium of thousands, run a missions team winning souls, or translate Bibles in obscure languages to reach people in forgotten pockets of the world?

What about talent, career, and vocational callings? Are we contributing less light to the world if we never pen the book that changes thousands of lives, or compose a musical score that causes even hardened criminals to weep, or run a company so prosperous it can donate enough money to save entire communities from starvation?

Do you wonder whether there even is, has ever been, or ever will be a calling on your life? Continue reading

When Life’s Puzzle Pieces Scatter: rediscovering the big picture

Posted by: Bridgett.

Do you like jigsaw puzzles?

Before I could even read, my mom instilled a deep enjoyment of them in me. I’m not sure whether it’s the mystery, the logical exercise of fitting shapes together in a way the makes imagesense, or just the challenge of all those pieces shouting, “where do I fit?” I just know, puzzles are fun.

Except when the pieces are scattered, the box top has gone missing, and the puzzle turns out to be your novel…or worse, your life.

Maybe you have the puzzle almost completed, know what the big picture on the box is supposed to look like. Then the pieces scatter, and you’re left with space enough for only half of them—but still have to make the picture work.

Now what? Continue reading

A dark day or Light at work?

The following was recently posted on Facebook. To the author, whose identity I don’t know, thank you for this beautiful insight into God’s behind-the-scenes work in our lives. How often are the shadows in our days actually evidence of His Light at work? Continue reading
