6 Steps to Reigniting Inspiration

What do you do when you search for a spark of inspiration, and find only cold ashes?

That’s exactly what happened to me this morning as I awoke with thoughts of the next blog post and chapters of novel revisions awaiting me. No sudden burst of light filled my mind. No warm flood of insight, no spontaneous combustion of ideas, just a bunch of dry, grey dust clogging my brain.

Though my fellow writers are likely nodding in empathy right now, this snuffing of inspiration doesn’t just plague wielders of the pen. Musicians, artists, business owners, marketers, parents, people of faith who’ve fallen into a spiritual rut—in short, everyone–will experience a slump in inspiration at some point.

Well then, what do we do about it?

The answers to that may be as varied as the individual flames in a fire, but let’s try to find a few of them together.  Continue reading

Are You Called to Shine, or to Ignite the Flame in Others?

Posted by: Bridgett.

Purpose. Calling. Ministers and self-help experts say everybody has one.

What’s yours? Have you found it yet?

Do you ever wonder why some people seem called to greatness, while others never hear such a summons?

If you are a Christian, do you feel somehow less “called” because you don’t stand in a pulpit before a stadium of thousands, run a missions team winning souls, or translate Bibles in obscure languages to reach people in forgotten pockets of the world?

What about talent, career, and vocational callings? Are we contributing less light to the world if we never pen the book that changes thousands of lives, or compose a musical score that causes even hardened criminals to weep, or run a company so prosperous it can donate enough money to save entire communities from starvation?

Do you wonder whether there even is, has ever been, or ever will be a calling on your life? Continue reading

When Life’s Puzzle Pieces Scatter: rediscovering the big picture

Posted by: Bridgett.

Do you like jigsaw puzzles?

Before I could even read, my mom instilled a deep enjoyment of them in me. I’m not sure whether it’s the mystery, the logical exercise of fitting shapes together in a way the makes imagesense, or just the challenge of all those pieces shouting, “where do I fit?” I just know, puzzles are fun.

Except when the pieces are scattered, the box top has gone missing, and the puzzle turns out to be your novel…or worse, your life.

Maybe you have the puzzle almost completed, know what the big picture on the box is supposed to look like. Then the pieces scatter, and you’re left with space enough for only half of them—but still have to make the picture work.

Now what? Continue reading

Introducing…The Unknown Writer!

Today, on Fantasy Friday, an aspiring speculative fiction author has chosen to honor us by launching her brand new blog and website right here on Light’s Scribe.

Rebecca Bergren, author of the Unknown Trilogy (working title), specializes in quirky, timeless, heartfelt fiction. Think Janet Evonovich meets Nicholas Sparks, with just enough steampunk thrown in to ramp up the mystery. Her spunky, eccentric characters and gift for redefining cliches are sure to have future readers laughing out loud, even while on the edges of their seats. Continue reading

Graduating or Growing Dim?

‘Tis the season for diplomas, cardboard caps, and “Pomp and Circumstance”. At least eight of my friends and family members are graduating from High school or college this month.

Recently, I’ve felt a deep longing to graduate too. Not from an academic institution, but to new levels in my faith and in the craft of writing.  Continue reading
